Taro O'Sullivan's first stint with a band was in Tokyo, Japan where he was born and raised. Not as a drummer but as a vocalist. He was one of the few people who could sing English rock songs without an accent, so he got the gig! But he knew all along that drums was his love. He never wanted to play anything else.
He enlisted in US Army and while stationed at Ft Bragg, he joined a band and they won the local battle of bands on base where he met musicians who were serious about music. After his discharge, he moved to Chicago and then to Columbus Ohio to play with his Army buddies where he co-founded the band, Axis, which achieved some local success. He then moved to the Bay area to play original music. He joined August, a local progressive original rock group. He connected with the original band Misfit Heroes which received a local award from BAMM (Bay Area Music Magazine) in the Best Unsigned Band category. There, he played all the usual spots such as the legendary clubs Bottom of the Hill, Paradise Lounge, New George’s, Bimbos, Last Day Saloon, and more, and opening for acts like Robby Krieger of the Doors. This led to him joining the original band Angel of Thunder, headlining at the premier original clubs in San Francisco and touring the College Circuit.
In 1996, he got custody of his three children and walked away from music for what he thought was for good.
He worked as an executive in the non-profit and government sector for most of his professional career which brought him to Los Angeles in 2011. Luck would have it that he met up with Mario Marrufo who was looking for a drummer for his band and they started playing hard hitting classic metal songs by greats such as Iron Maiden, Dio and others. Mario’s life had taken similar turns as Taro’s and they’ve been playing ever since. When Taro isn’t playing drums, he can be found on his Harley riding up the Pacific Coast Highway or enjoying a meal at the local biker handout “Neptune’s Net.”
